]]> In the northeastern state of Manipur in India, police arrested Kishorechandra Wangkhem, a TV journalist on charges of promoting enmity between groups and making a statement with an intent to incite and cause mischief following a Facebook post in which he wrote about the death of the president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party due to COVID-19 and criticized the government’s response to the pandemic. A complaint was filed with the police by local leaders of the party. He was taken into custody on May 13 and remanded until May 17.

]]> Three local journalists were issued notices by the district administration of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh state. The notices asked for information on the sources of news reports that alleged that in the middle of a medical emergency in Rae Bareli district, 20 metric tonnes of medical oxygen were diverted to Kanpur. The district administration has called the reports “baseless and false”.
